In mid-October, Discovery Communications, owner of information-oriented cable channels like the Discovery Channel, TLC, and Animal Planet, expanded its presence on the Internet by purchasing the fact-spouting Web site HowStuffWorks, Inc., which is privately held. The companies did not release any financial details of the transaction. However, Wall Street analysts place the price tag at $250 million in cash.

HowStuffWorks.com is a popular Web site that purports to present accurate, unbiased details on how the world does or could work in easily digestible language. The site includes articles on everything from the practical (how to buy or sell a car, cure bad breath, make pancakes) to the wishful (how salt water could be processed and used to fuel cars). The Web site claims that it currently gets about 11 million visitors a month.
