Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr has given the world an instructive look at legal fees in a massive patent lawsuit. The Boston-based firm has filed an extensive motion in San Diego federal court detailing its $8.5 million-plus price tag for work on behalf of Broadcom Corp. in its rancorous patent dispute with rival Qualcomm Inc. Some of the highlights include an $850-an-hour rate from the top Boston-based partner assigned to the case, and significantly higher hourlies across the board than another well-known firm charged Broadcom.

The usually-confidential rates have become public knowledge because after ruling in Broadcom’s favor, Judge Rudi Brewster ordered Qualcomm to pay all Broadcom’s legal fees. Qualcomm has filed a notice announcing it will appeal both the decision and the judge’s other findings to the Federal Circuit. Despite that pending appeal, the trajectory of the legal-fee ruling continues forwardhence, Broadcom’s detailed Aug. 31 motion laying bare the billing for this bear of an IP case.
