Michael Baroni is general counsel of BSH Home Appliances, a wholly-owned U.S. subsidiary of a German company. He operates a one-person law department at BSH, but works closely with three in-house intellectual property lawyers and has weekly contact with company headquarters in Germany. Baroni talks about how he picks outside counsel, the difficulties in explaining the U.S. legal system to German executives and managing to limit one year's outside legal fees to $110,000 on 24 litigation matters.
