    Slaughter and May and Macfarlanes have taken lead roles on Vodafone's $130bn (£84bn) sale of its 45% stake in US mobile operator Verizon Wireless, with regular Vodafone adviser Linklaters missing out on one of the largest corporate deals in history. The sale, to US telecoms giant Verizon Communications, has also handed roles to a trio of US firms - Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz and Debevoise & Plimpton for Verizon and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett for Vodafone.

    Skadden, K&L Gates lead as Baidu takes stake in group-buying site

    Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom and K&L Gates were lead advisors as Chinese social networking company Renren agreed to sell shares of its Groupon-like subsidiary Nuomi Holdings to Chinese internet search giant Baidu. The deal, which remains subject to approval, will see Baidu take a 59% equity interest in Nuomi for a purchase price of $160m, giving it a bigger share of China's fast-growing group-buying market.

    Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Shearman & Sterling, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and Travers Smith have all taken roles on private equity house TPG Capital's acquisition of Times Education Supplement (TES) publisher TSL Education, from Charterhouse Capital. The deal, which makes TPG the fourth owner of the business in eight years, is reported to be worth around £400m and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2013.

    Linklaters has emerged as the top-ranked European M&A adviser for the first half of 2013, as deal values and volumes across the continent fall to their lowest levels since 2010. Research from Legal Week's exclusive data provider Mergermarket shows that the firm advised on 87 European deals with a total value of $72bn (£47bn) during the six-month period, while the firm also topped the UK rankings by value, with roles on 32 deals worth a total of $32bn (£21bn).
