    Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge is launching a London banking practice with the hire of City finance veteran Charles Proctor from Bird & Bird. The US law firm said the move had come in a bid to sustain its growing transactional practice, including in private equity and venture capital as well as its insurance practice, as Proctor also has substantial regulatory experience.

    Partnership prospects on the up as promotions at UK top 50 rise 38%

    Partner promotions across the UK's 50 largest law firms by revenue increased by more than a third this year, buoyed by growing market confidence and a cluster of 
transatlantic mergers. Total partner promotions across the group stood at 495 globally in 2011, compared with 358 the previous year – an increase of just over 38%.

    After watching partner profits sink in 2008 (down 4.3%) and crawl back into positive territory in 2009 (a mere 0.3% increase), The Am Law 100 collectively exhaled last year as profits per equity partner (PEP) jumped a healthy 8.4%. Major US law firms certainly didn't let the economic crisis go to waste. They cut overhead, principally by trimming headcount at all levels, and reined in expenses. (Lavish retreats in exotic locales gave way to pedestrian events at the home office.) Dingemans was appointed on Thursday (12 May) to review claims made by former FA chairman Lord Triesman to a Parliamentary select committee this week relating to allegations that four FIFA officials had sought "bribes" to back England's bid.
