    BNP Paribas GC launches global panel review with expansion aim

    BNP Paribas has kicked off its first global panel review since bringing in the former head of Herbert Smith's Paris banking practice, Georges Dirani, in October 2010 as general counsel. The France-headquartered bank sent out a tender document to more than 20 firms last month, with a view to increasing the size of the roster to take into account the bank's geographic reach.

    Herbert Smith has taken a lead European role as a consortium including Apple, Microsoft and Sony Ericsson won a contest against Google to buy 6,000 strategic Nortel Networks patents for $4.5bn (£2.8bn). Herbert Smith advised Ernst & Young, the administrator to Nortel's entities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, on the competitive auction.

    Barclays has added three US firms to its general advisory panel, following a comprehensive panel review intended to increase value for money from the bank's regular advisers. Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Shearman & Sterling and Sullivan & Cromwell have been added to the bank's main general advisory panel after Barclays decided to include the creation of a US sub-division for the first time.

    Cleary takes Stanley Black & Decker role on $1.2bn Swedish takeover bid

    Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton is acting for Stanley Black & Decker on its billion-dollar bidding battle with Securitas to acquire Swedish security systems company Niscayah, reports The Am Law Daily. Stanley Black & Decker's offer of $1.2bn (£753m) is roughly 25% more than Securitas' earlier offer of $910m (£571m). Securitas, which spun off from Niscayah in 2006 and moved to repurchase the company earlier this year, is now likely to make a counterbid.
