Wragge & Co and Bird and Bird have won places on communications company Airwave's first legal panel. The two firms were appointed following a competitive tender process at the end of last year involving 12 other firms, with the decision coming after an extensive review of the company's legal services. Airwave, a communications provider for public service organisations, appointed Wragges to its panel despite the firm having no prior relationship with the company's legal team, although the national firm had advised Airwave when it was a subsidiary of O2.

EasyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has instructed Travers Smith to defend him with regards to a lawsuit brought against him by Bird & Bird for a six-digit sum of unpaid fees. The dispute between Sir Stelios and Bird & Bird arose after the law firm was instructed by easyGroup IP Licensing in 2008 to advise on Sir Stelios's brand dispute with the airline over the use of the easyJet name.

Herbert Smith wins Litigation and Regulatory Team of the Year thanks to its work securing British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) damages of at least £272m from EDS following the botched installation of a customer relationship management (CRM) system. The firm was originally instructed by BSkyB in 2002, shortly after EDS was removed from its role as systems integrator. The challenge was to overturn a liability cap arranged at the outset of the deal that limited EDS' liability for damages to a maximum of £30m.
