A trio of top Irish law firms have taken roles on an $11.8bn (£7.5bn) deal which has seen US power management company Eaton move its headquarters to Ireland, saving the the US business millions of dollars in taxes a year. The multibillion-dollar acquisition of Irish electrical equipment supplier Cooper Industries will create a global electricity company incorporated in the Emerald Isle, with the combined business called Eaton Global.

Diageo has instructed a trio of leading law firms on a $2.5bn (£1.5bn) financing deal that saw the London-based drinks giant tap the US bond markets. Davis Polk & Wardwell has recruited another Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer partner for its English law practice in the City, following the hire of corporate veteran Simon Witty for its launch this month. Tax partner Jonathan Cooklin is set to join the Wall Street leader's London base after 19 years at the magic circle firm, where he has been a partner since 2001 and head of the insurance tax group. Legal Week's research into the hiring activity and penetration of US firms in London found total partner count at the 45 US and transatlantic firms in London taking part in the survey increased by 91 in the year to January 2012, to 1,199.

Partner hiring by US firms in London increased by over 25% in 2011, with firms adding more partners to their City bases than at any time over the last five years. Legal Week's annual survey of hiring trends at the City operations of some of the largest US and transatlantic firms found there were 116 partner hires during 2011 across the 45 firms taking part in the survey. The overwhelming majority of these (101) were partners at their previous firms.

A quartet of elite New York law firms saw revenues grow last year, as details of the 2011 financial performance of America's top firms continue to emerge, reports The Am Law Daily. The biggest of the four, Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, saw revenue increase 3% to $2.17bn (£1.38bn), while profits per partner (PEP) rose 7% to $2.48m (£1.58m).
