    Wragge & Co and Shoosmiths have announced their new partner promotions, with both regional firms confirming slightly smaller rounds than last year. News of their promotions came as Field Fisher Waterhouse today (28 March) confirmed a six-strong haul split between London, Munich and Brussels. Wragges is making up two directors to partner from 1 May - compared with a trio of new partners last year. The promotions will see Birmingham intellectual property lawyer Kate Swaine and construction specialist Daniel Wood joining the partnership.

    Addleshaws ramps up paralegal hiring with 30 set to join in three months

    Addleshaw Goddard is set to increase the size of its Manchester transaction services team (TST) by almost 50% over the coming months, as it looks to step up the amount of work carried out by the paralegal service. The firm is planning to hire 10 paralegals each month for the next three months, in a recruitment drive intended to bring headcount to 100. The team has already grown from five to 70 paralegals since launch in 2010, and the firm is considering relocating it to a separate Manchester base. The increase in manpower comes as part of a firmwide efficiency drive intended to result in the TST delivering at least 10% of its work by 2015.

    Staff costs soar as top UK firms pay out almost 50% of revenues

    The UK's top 30 law firms spent almost half of their combined turnover on staff costs during the last financial year, with the total bill coming to £4.5bn. Legal Week analysis of limited liability partnership (LLP) accounts filed with Companies House for the 2011-12 financial year shows total staff costs for both lawyers and support staff accounted for 42% of fee income, with the total amount spent rising by 7.3% year-on-year.

    Simmons makes double City partner hire from K&L Gates

    Simmons & Simmons has made a double partner hire from K&L Gates' London office, taking on the US firm's UK heads of pensions and employee incentives. Pensions partner Danny Tsang and employment partner Ian Fraser have joined Simmons' City employment and benefits team, taking the total partner count in the group to 10. Tsang has been at K&L Gates since 2007, when he joined from McDermott Will & Emery to launch a London pensions practice for the firm. His practice covers plan restructurings and corporate pensions strategies, as well as pensions aspects relating to corporate transactions, business recovery and restructuring.
