    US firms in London push City partner hiring to record levels in 2010

    Lateral partner hiring by US firms in London picked up last year after the financial downturn, with firms bringing in more partners in 2010 than in any year since the start of 2006. Legal Week's annual survey of hiring trends at the City operations of some of the largest US and transatlantic firms found there were 84 partner hires during 2010 across the 35 firms which took part in the survey.

    The Global 100: The tracks of my tiers

    Once again, it's merger-talk season. There was a flurry of activity last year that culminated in the various Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, Norton Rose and Squire Sanders & Dempsey transoceanic combinations. They were notable because they all opted to organise as Swiss vereins rather than single-profit sharing partnerships, and all were motivated, at least in part, by a desire to get bigger so they could compete for work and talent that was waiting for those firms that, well, got bigger. The wooing continues. Consultants log George Clooney-esque air miles trying to complete promising law firm mergers. And partners seek to convince themselves either that they're not being acquired or that an acquisition is necessary to have a chance at becoming one of the Select 17 (or whatever) who will stand astride the known world, someday really soon.

    Reed Smith launches new London incentives practice with Stephenson Harwood hire

    Reed Smith is set to launch a standalone incentives and benefits practice in London with the hire of Stephenson Harwood's employee incentives team head Jeremy Glover. Glover is currently a partner in the corporate department of Stephenson Harwood where he is one of two lawyers specialising in employee incentives. He is due to leave the firm on 30 April to join Reed Smith.

    Watson Farley & Williams has boosted its London asset finance practice with the hire of a team of transportation finance lawyers from Reed Smith. Reed Smith finance partners Rex Rosales and Siva Subramaniam are due to join Watson Farley's London office next Monday (13 December) accompanied by three associates. The departures leave Reed Smith without a UK transport finance team.
