    BLP seals hire of DLA Piper partner for London regulatory practice

    Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has strengthened its regulatory practice with the hire of Daren Allen from DLA Piper. Allen joined the UK top 20 firm earlier this week (4 January) as a partner in its disputes group. He served as a partner within DLA Piper's litigation and regulation group and headed up the national firm's financial services team until his departure at the end of December.

    Pastor Terry Jones ban: Koran burning and free speech

    Terry Jones, an American pastor who threatened to burn Korans on the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, may be banned from visiting the UK by the Home Secretary. Jones, an otherwise unknown local pastor in Gainsville, Florida, caused worldwide controversy earlier this year when he proposed an 'International Burn a Koran Day'. He has not as yet carried out his threat.

    'Core values' is a theme that traditionally features heavily at the Bar Council's annual conference. This year - with deep cuts looming to legal aid and huge upheaval expected with the implementation in 2011 of the Legal Services Act (LSA) - was no exception. Speakers including Kim Hollis QC and Lord Neuberger paid customary tribute to the concept, before Mayor of London Boris Johnson took to the stage to deliver a gag-filled address. With laughter still echoing around the Hilton Metropole on Edgware Road, delegates filed out into a foyer full of stalls from upmarket wealth management and luxury goods companies.

    Jones Day Madrid chief relocates to Sao Paulo to launch new Brazil base

    Jones Day's Madrid head Luis Riesgo is relocating to Sao Paulo to launch a Brazil office for the US firm, reports The Am Law Daily. Riesgo, the chair of the firm's Latin American practice, will be followed by partners Sanjiv Kapur and Wade Angus, who have begun the process of becoming licensed as consultants in foreign law in Brazil. The partner trio will be joined two associates who are qualified to practise in New York and Madrid.
