    US Briefing: Manhattan judge slams Dorsey

    A Manhattan federal judge has delivered a lengthy manifesto against declining civility in the legal profession in the course of sanctioning law firm Dorsey & Whitney and two of its partners. Southern District of New York Judge Harold Baer opened his 129-page decision with a discussion of how "naked competition and singular economic focus of the marketplace have begun to infiltrate the practice of law, subordinating the high standards of service, collegiality and professionalism as a result."

    New York leader Simpson Thacher & Bartlett has promoted eight lawyers to its partnership. The bulk of the promotions, which are effective from 1 January, 2008, are in the firm's New York headquarters but London-based litigator Tyler Robinson also joins the firm's elite tier.     Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Allen & Overy have become the latest firms to announce they will be paying one-off bonuses to their New York associates. Both firms have met market rates, with associates at Freshfields to be given from $10,000 (£4,900) to $50,000 (£24,400) depending on seniority, in addition to the firm's scheduled bonus of between $35,000 (£17,000) and $65,000 (£31,700). The special bonus will be paid at the end of this month, with a year-end bonus being paid on 31 December.

    Shearman, Fried Frank follow suit on NY bonus

    Shearman & Sterling and Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson have announced their intention to give associates a "special" one-time bonus as well as the traditional year-end bonus, the New York Law Journal reports. The New York duo both said last week (9 November) that they will award special bonuses ranging from $10,000 (£4,800) up to $50,000 (£24,020). The payments come in addition to class-year bonuses of between $35,000 (£16,810) to $65,000 (£31,220).
