Flanigan, who joined the firm on 16 June, will head the capital markets practice and brings the total Paris partnership to 15.Prior to joining the Anglo-American firm, Flanigan headed up the capital markets practice at US rival Winston & Strawn in Paris for three years. Class action law firm Milberg today (17 June) reached a $75m (£38.1m) settlement with federal prosecutors over the payment of kickbacks to individual plaintiffs in shareholder cases, writes the New York Law Journal. The firm - four of whose former name partners have pleaded guilty in the past year to criminal charges relating to the payments - will pay the sum in installments until 2012.

A federal judge in Los Angeles has sentenced Melvyn Weiss, the co-founding partner of Milberg, to 30 months in prison. US District Judge John Walter of the Central District of California said it was "difficult to reconcile" Weiss's numerous charitable contributions with his criminal conduct, which "strikes directly at the core and heart of the judicial system." Weiss is set to report to prison on 28 August. His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, of Brafman & Associates, asked that Weiss serve his sentence at a men's minimum security facility in West Virginia.
