    Shearman adds four to City partnership in annual promotion round

    Shearman & Sterling has become the latest US firm to announce its global partner promotions, with nearly half of new partners joining in the firm's City office. Thomas Donegan is joining the global financial regulatory practice area in London, while Peter Hayes will be joining the finance department. M&A lawyer Jeremy Kutner and bankruptcy specialist Solomon Noh have also been promoted in London.

    M&A Team of the Year: Slaughter and May

    Slaughter and May's work advising British Airways (BA) on its 
merger with Spanish airline Iberia secures it the highly-prized M&A Team of the Year Award. The deal was a complex one, given that it involved two flagship national airlines operating within a highly-regulated sector. It drew on Slaughters' expertise in corporate, capital markets, regulatory, tax and commercial law. The merger was completed in January 2011 and created a new holding company, International Consolidated Airlines Group (IAG). It is one of the world's largest airlines, and the second-largest in Europe, having a market value £5.3bn at the time of the merger.

    SJ Berwin and Clifford Chance (CC) are among a host of firms to win roles as beleaguered music company EMI is split into two, with Universal Music set to take over the recording unit for £1.2bn and a Sony-led consortium bidding $2.2bn (£1.4bn) for the publishing business. EMI, home to artists including Pink Floyd, the Beatles and Blur, has been under Citigroup's ownership since February this year when it took it over from buyout house Terra Firma.
