Addleshaw Goddard has finalised a redundancy round in its business services function which has resulted in 31 job cuts. The layoffs, effective at the end of June, came after a 30-day consultation the firm announced in May this year which saw 40 support roles placed under review. No fee earners were affected by the cuts.

Bird & Bird, Clyde & Co, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and DLA Piper have emerged among the best-performing firms in the top 25 over the last five years, but Legal Week research confirms that many smaller firms have outpaced their larger rivals in growth terms. Of the UK's top 25 law firms, Bird & Bird has seen the largest percentage jump in revenues since 2005-06, rising 121.9% from £96.7m five years ago to £214.6m in 2010-11.

Simmons & Simmons has reported a small drop in fee income for 2010-11 to £243m, with profits per equity partner (PEP) dipping marginally to £460,000. The City firm's turnover is down 3% on last year's figure of £251m, with PEP seeing a drop of less than 1% from the 2009-10 figure of £461,000.

Home improvement giant Kingfisher is planning to slash the number of large law firms it uses, as part of a panel review intended to help the company maximise its legal spend. Kingfisher, which owns brands including B&Q and Screwfix, is mid-way through the review, which is expected to see the company scale-back the number of leading international law firms on its roster from 10 firms to around four.
