    Mayer Brown in Johnson Stokes Asia merger

    Mayer Brown is to merge with leading Hong Kong firm Johnson Stokes & Master. The deal, which will complete on 28 January, will dramatically increase the Anglo US firm's presence in Asia, handing it a seven-office network with more than 260 lawyers and a turnover of $160m (£80.5m).Talks between the two firms began four months ago after Johnson Stokes approached Mayer Brown. Johnson Stokes' 41 equity partners voted through the merger unanimously two days ago (26 January).Under the terms of the deal, Mayer Brown will practise as Mayer Brown JSM in Asia.

    Mayer Brown partner charged with securities fraud

    A senior Mayer Brown partner was indicted yesterday (18 December) on charges he helped Refco conceal from investors that a company owned by former chief executive Phillip Bennett owed Refco hundreds of millions of dollars, writes the New York Law Journal. Joseph Collins, head of the law firm's derivatives group, was charged in the Southern District of New York with securities fraud and a host of other counts in connection with the 2004 sale of a majority stake in the financial services company and a 2005 initial public offering.

    Mayer Brown adds new co-director to tax team

    Mayer Brown has named Laurent Borey as co-director of its international tax practice. Borey becomes one of six directors of the Anglo-American firm's tax practice, and the only representative from Europe. He joins James Barry and Joel Williamson in Chicago, Kenneth Klein in Washington DC, Jeffrey Cantrell in Charlotte, and Larry Langdon in Palo Alto. Borey currently heads Mayer Brown's 13-strong tax team in Paris.
