    Clyde & Co seals New Jersey launch

    Clyde & Co has launched an office in New Jersey, giving the insurance outfit its third office in the US alongside New York and San Francisco. The top 20 UK firm has hired two partners and a team of associates from US firm Connell Foley. The office will be headed by partner Daren McNally who joins with fellow partner Barbara Almeida.

    Protracted Shadbolt talks end in a tidy acquisition for Clydes

    It took some time to get there, and it didn't pan out as initially expected, but the conclusion to the merger talks between Clyde & Co and Shadbolt appears to be a good result for the London-based insurance firm. Talks between the two started over a year ago after the construction boutique completed a strategic review of its business. The retirement of high-profile name partner Dick Shadbolt in 2008 left the firm without a clear-cut strategy and struggling to maintain its financial performance, according to a variety of partners familiar with the firm. With 18 partners spread across its offices in London, Guildford, Reigate and Paris, Shadbolt was struggling to adopt its focus of handling corporate and projects work for UK subcontractors to an increasingly international construction market.

    A matter of timing

    The costs of disclosure have rocketed in recent years with the shift from paper to electronic documents. The growth of email, together with the increased use of portable digital devices, has combined to produce an explosion in the volume of documents created by businesses, and the courts have now begun to take notice. Lord Justice Jackson has identified the disclosure process as one of the main causes of excessive litigation costs, and a string of recent judgments have penalised litigants for failing to properly manage their disclosure exercises.

    Training and education: All tied up

    The last few years have seen the College of Law, BPP Law School and, to a lesser extent, Kaplan Law School jostle with each other to secure tie-ups with the top law firms. In the main, firms have been receptive to their advances, with the result being that the vast majority of UK top 20 law firms - and many top 50 firms and US firms with London offices - now have arrangements in place to send their future trainees to study the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and Legal Practice Course (LPC) exclusively with a certain course provider.
