Latham & Watkins and Jones Day have won lead roles on the Indian Government-sponsored auction for outsourcing firm Satyam Computer Services, reports The Am Law Daily.On Monday (13 April), the scandal-plagued company announced the sale of a 51% stake in its business to Indian telecommunications company Tech Mahindra in a deal valued at nearly $600m (£403m).Hyderabad-based Satyam found itself on the verge of collapse in early January after founder and former chairman Ramalinga Raju admitted to board members that the company's accounts had been falsified. Last week India's Central Bureau of Investigation charged nine people - including Raju and two of Satyam's outside auditors from PricewaterhouseCoopers - with forgery and fraud.

Wall Street has trumped UK rivals to top the global M&A rankings by value for the first quarter of 2009. Rankings compiled by Mergermarket show Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom heading the global value table - working on 28 deals worth $169bn (£113bn). Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz, Sullivan & Cromwell and Davis Polk & Wardwell take the next slots by value, with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer the highest-placed UK firm in the table at number five.

SJ Berwin is gearing up to launch in Dubai with an office set to open in the emirate as soon the firm receives regulatory approval. It is understood that London-based litigation partner Tim Taylor and Paris-based funds formation partner Benjamin Aller will both relocate to the region to head up the new operation.The news comes after the firm's Hong Kong office officially opened last week (1 April), having gained regulatory approval to operate as a foreign firm.

BT has kicked off a sweeping review of its panel of external legal advisers, piloting an eBay-style online auction for its real estate panel as part of the process. Panel firms were contacted last month, with the review being led by group general counsel Anne Fletcher. It is expected to be completed within the next three to six months. The review comes after the telecoms giant launched an e-auction pilot for its real estate advisers earlier this year. The pilot saw seven firms bidding against each other on various criteria, including hourly rates and fixed prices, with the process also including formal interviews with each firm.

The US firm's New York-based corporate partner Berge Setrakian - who counts several large Iberian companies among his clients, including Telefonica and Iberdola - is leading the initiative, although it is understood that another Dewey lawyer will head up the base after its launch.The firm is planning to staff the office with internal relocations rather than local lateral hires. Jones Day has launched an office in Dubai with the relocation of London-based project finance partner Arman Galledari to head the new outpost. The firm is also relocating Washington-based litigation partner Sheila Shadmand to the office, which will have six lawyers in total. One counsel and one associate are moving with Galledari from London, while another associate has been hired from US rival Baker Botts' Dubai base. The firm has also recruited a local UAE-qualified associate.The office will focus on energy, finance, arbitration and M&A work.
