The team, whose move is effective from 1 February, represents almost half the total fee earners at 120-attorney Anderson Kill and includes several members of the firm's executive management team, including former president and chief executive Jeffrey Glatzer. Twenty-five join Reed Smith as partners, three join as counsel and 27 as associates.

Merger and lateral activity among US law firms slowed slightly in 2007 but despite the darkening financial horizon, many in the industry expect the attorney shuffle to retain energy in 2008, writes the National Law Journal. According to consultancy group Hildebrandt International, mergers involving US law firms totaled 55 in 2007 - comprising 23 in the first quarter, 14 in the second quarter, 11 in the third quarter and just seven in the fourth quarter.

Managing partners nationwide expect a weak 2008 to bring fewer equity partner promotions, longer hours and higher rates, according to a new survey released Wednesday. Citi Private Bank's Managing Partner Confidence Index found that overall confidence fell nearly 20% in 2007, dropping by larger amounts each quarter. Top law firm consultant Bradford Hildebrandt, whose consulting firm will release its own 2008 forecast soon, says the blue mood is probably going to prove justified.

Reed Smith has become the latest US firm to unveil its financial results for 2007, with the Pittsburgh firm breaking the $1m (£510,000) barrier for profits per equity partner (PEP) for the first time. PEP climbed from last year's mark of $940,000 (£476,140) to reach a new high of $1m - an improvement of just over 6%. Revenue per lawyer also edged up by 6%, from $652,000 (£332,000) to $690,000 (£351, 000).
