National giant Eversheds is being sued for £20m by Nationwide in one of the largest negligence claims brought against a top UK firm in recent times. The action was filed by the UK building society in the High Court earlier this month (7 September). It claims that Eversheds provided negligent advice on an allegedly fraudulent property deal in which Nationwide offered a £14.25m loan to Mr Saleem Arshid and his company SA Estates, secured on a Welsh building in Carmarthen worth less then £1m.

At first blush, the results of Legal Week's annual US firms in London survey appear contradictory. On the one hand, nearly half of the top US firms in London are now open to the idea of a merger. On the other, more firms than ever are taking on trainees and around half now say they have full-service offerings in the capital. The number preparing to launch new departments has also crept up. This suggests a commitment to long-term investment rather than desperation for a tie-up.
