    Addleshaws connects with Tiscali on Carphone Warehouse purchase

    Addleshaw Goddard has scored a leading role acting opposite a raft of firms on Carphone Warehouse's £236m acquisition of the UK operations of internet services business Tiscali. The national law firm advised Tiscali on the deal, which will see Carphone Warehouse subsidiary TalkTalk acquire Tiscali UK to take the broadband provider's customer base to more than 4.25 million people.

    Barlows names new Hong Kong and China chief

    Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has appointed a new managing partner for Hong Kong and China. The top 50 UK firm has promoted litigation partner David Smyth to the role, replacing Camille Jojo, who has held the position since 1995. The news comes as Barlows undergoes a period of change in the region. The firm recently relocated London insurance partner John Hanson and aviation partner Mert Hifzi to Singapore.

Clifford Chance, Clyde & Co, Debevoise & Plimpton, Eversheds, Gide Loyrette Nouel, Holman Fenwick Willan, Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge, Dewey & LeBoeuf, Mayer Brown, Norton Rose and Simmons & Simmons have all been re-appointed to the insurance giant's panel for two years.

    Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has appointed a new head of corporate after current head Keith Snedden handed in his notice. London corporate insurance partner Mike Munro has been chosen to take on the practice head role after it emerged that Snedden was stepping down from the post and leaving the firm.     Links to pay £5 as $55m negligence battle ends

    Linklaters has staved off paying out a $55m (£37m) negligence claim - one of the largest made against a UK law firm in recent years - having instead to pay out £5 in nominal damages to telecoms company Levicom. In the judgment, handed down in the Royal Courts of Justice today (21 April), Mr Justice Andrew Smith ruled that, despite finding Linklaters' early advice to the claimant was expressed negligently, it did not bear any loss to the client and therefore awarded nominal damages of just £5.On all other issues, Smith found Linklaters had not acted negligently.
