    Taylor Wessing bets on property with W&C hire

    Taylor Wessing has bolstered its City real estate practice with the hire of White & Case partner Lorraine Ufland. Ufland, who joined the US firm in 2003 from LG, will start working at Taylor Wessing later this month, taking the real estate partner count to 13. Her hire marks the firm's first lateral partner appointment since November 2008, when it hired insurance partner Anthony Menzies from Clyde & Co.

    Partner promotions down a third this year at top 50 UK law firms

    New partner promotions across the UK's top 50 law firms plunged by a third between 2008 and 2009, with the downturn impacting on lawyers' opportunities to advance into the partnership. Taking into account promotions at firms such as Clifford Chance and Simmons & Simmons, which pushed their decisions back until the summer, there were 399 promotions across the UK's 50 biggest firms by revenue in 2009. This compared with 598 in 2008.

    Insurance specialists buck the trend to climb the table

    Firms in the insurance sector have bucked the downturn in the global economy to put in a strong performance in 2008-09. Insurance specialists Kennedys and Berrymans Lace Mawer have joined the top 50 after both reported revenue increases of more than 20%. Together with fellow insurance firms Holman Fenwick Willan, Barlow Lyde & Gilbert and Clyde & Co, the group significantly outperformed the top 50 as a whole.

    Twelve City law firms have signed up to the College of Law's dispute resolution training consortium. The programme of twelve courses concentrates on the basics of litigation and alternative dispute resolution, and will be taught to lawyers from zero to three years' post qualification experience. It follows similar pooled training programmes that have been introduced during recent years in the areas of corporate, property and banking.

    Clyde & Co revenue rise hits double-digit mark with 18% increase

    Clyde & Co has posted a double-digit rise in revenue, with turnover for 2008-09 breaking through the £180m mark. The top 20 firm saw revenues jump by just under 18% to hit £185m, up from £157m the previous year. Overall profits at the firm grew by 11% however profits per equity (PEP) partner remained broadly steady with last year, when the firm reported a 10% increase in PEP to £550,000.
