The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) could become part of an FBI-style National Crime Agency (NCA) as part of the coalition Government's efforts to confront fraud costing the UK £30bn every year. It had been expected that the Government's shake-up of UK financial regulation would see the SFO disbanded in favour of a new Economic Crime Agency (ECA). Home Office policing minister Nick Herbert, who earlier this year took over the job of creating the ECA from the Treasury, is set to launch a long-awaited consultation in the spring on what the ECA should look like and how it will operate.

Addleshaw Goddard has reported a 4% drop in revenues for the first half of the 2010-11 financial year. The firm has posted fee income of £78.1m for the first six months of the year - down from the figure of £81.3m reported at the same point last year. The firm attributed the drop to the use of a number of conditional fee arrangements (CFAs) in significant contentious cases. Without these, the firm said that it would have posted flat H1 revenues on last year.

The judges were impressed both by the simplicity of thinking behind Pinsent Mason's HR Network TV and the hard evidence of its usefulness to its intended audience - busy human resources (HR) executives. The project was conceived and developed by Pinsents' national employment group, which had received feedback from HR clients that they wanted legal briefings and updates delivered in a more immediate and less time-consuming way than via seminars and written briefings. This was especially important because budget cuts meant it was more difficult for these executives to attend seminars precisely at a time when they needed to be at the top of their games thanks to the impact of the credit crunch.
