International law firms with Brazilian alliances look set to come under renewed regulatory pressure after the Sao Paulo Bar Association this month concluded that formal tie-ups breach local practice rules. The recent opinion from the Sao Paulo Bar (Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil - Secao de Sao Paulo) illustrates the mounting tension over the recent influx of foreign law firms into Brazil's fast-growing market. Though the decision by the ethical and disciplinary tribunal of the Sao Paulo Bar is only advisory, it is regarded as giving an indication as to which way a ruling would go if a case were to be pursued against one of the foreign firms operating in Brazil in alliance with a local firm.

Shearman & Sterling has signed an exclusive deal with Kaplan Law School to provide the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and Graduate Diploma of Law (GDL) for its London trainees. As a part of the agreement, which will start in Autumn 2011, trainees at the US firm's London office will participate in Kaplan's 'Bridge to Practice' programme, which is designed to ease the transition from the LPC into a commercial law firm. The programme comprises practical modules and work experience, including workshops on topics such as working with partners, negotiation, legal ethics and internal law firm politics.

The number of US lawyers applying to practice local law in Hong Kong has quadrupled over the past two years as the region becomes a hot spot for companies listing on its stock exchange. Figures from the Hong Kong Law Society show that 64 US lawyers took the Hong Kong overseas lawyers qualification examination (QLQE) exam last year compared to 14 in 2008, and the trend looks set to continue with an estimated 65 having taken the exam so far in 2010.

Brazil has long been an M&A magnet for foreign buyers, often looking to pick up assets in the country's booming agribusiness, commodities and energy sectors. But data for the first half of 2010 recently released by ANBIMA, the Brazilian association of financial and capital markets firms, reveals that for the first time acquisitions abroad by Brazilian companies outweighed purchases of Brazilian businesses by foreign investors, in terms of both aggregate deal value and number of transactions. Brazilian businesses spent $22bn (£14bn) on purchases of foreign businesses in the six months to 30 June, compared with inbound acquisitions totalling $9.3bn (£5.9bn).
