Clyde & Co is gearing up to bring a major class action against a subsidiary of HSBC over the alleged mis-selling of insurance policies, which could be worth up to £330m. The firm is getting ready to set up a group action to seek compensation from HFC Bank, which is owned by UK lending giant HSBC, after HFC was fined around £1m by the Financial Services Authority in January for mis-selling payment protection insurance.

Herbert Smith has racked up $100m (£51m) in fees for work representing the Republic of Tajikistan in an ongoing legal battle with a group of aluminium traders. Costs disclosed in the High Court last month (April) in front of Mr Justice Tomlinson reveal the firm is set to bill approximately $100m on the case, which sees it advising Tajik Aluminium Company (Talco) as it seeks damages of more than $485m (£244m).
