    Clydes signs up to UK pro bono mediation project

    Clyde & Co has volunteered to be part of the first UK pro bono mediation centre. The project has been set up by UK pro bono charity LawWorks, and will be its first mediation advice clinic. Clydes lawyers and non-lawyers will give advice at Brent Citizens Advice on how mediation works, which scheme is suitable for clients and complete and lodge documents.

    Clyde brings partnership numbers up to 140

    Clyde & Co has made a number of internal promotions which bring its total partnership count to 140. Three senior associates and a consultant were promoted to the partnership and six existing partners were promoted to equity status. Six of the promotions, which take effect on 1 May, were in London while there were two in Guildford. Singapore and Dubai each received one.

    Shipping firms lead $100m Napoli insurance dispute

    Shipping and maritime specialists Clyde & Co and Holman Fenwick & Willan have bagged major roles in the insurance dispute surrounding cargo ship the MSC Napoli, which looks set to be worth around $100m (£51m). Clydes is representing more than 40 underwriters that insured the cargo, in a bid to retrieve $62m (£32m) from Metvale, the owners of the MSC Napoli, which ran aground 40 miles south of Cornwall at the beginning of the year.

    Clyde & Co Dubai head joins insurance company

    International General Insurance Holdings has appointed Clyde & Co's Dubai office head, Jonathan Silver, as one of two new members of its board. The underwriting and reinsurance company, which is registered in the Dubai International Financial Centre, has total assets in excess of $240m (£122m). Silver joins the board of 11 directors alongside Hani Tarazi, former managing partner of the United Arab Emirates branch of Deloitte & Touche.

    Clyde & Co has opened an office in Qatar after the hire of a consultant from City rival Simmons & Simmons. David Salt rejoins Clyde & Co, where he was previously a partner, to head up the new office, which is set to open later this month. He has advised on corporate and banking matters for the Qatari Government and has also acted for several public and private companies in the region. He recently advised Qatar-incorporated Mannai Corporation on the first Qatari debt for equity swap.

The defendant, Music Trading Online, sells CDs and DVDs worldwide through its website. The claimants had originally brought proceedings in the English and Irish courts against the defendant in 2002, complaining that Music Trading was infringing their copyright and parallel importing music products into the European Economic Area (EEA).
