Lateral partner hires among elite US firms in London have slowed during the last year, according to research from Legal Week, which illustrates the uphill struggle faced by US firms attempting to recruit leading names in the City.The survey of hiring trends at 23 US firms in London found they made a total of 65 lateral hires in 2007, up from 58 the previous year but down on 2005, when hiring activity peaked and 70 lawyers were recruited.Significantly, some of the US' top firms saw a fall in partner-hiring activity with 10 firms, including Latham & Watkins, Kirkland & Ellis, Weil Gotshal & Manges and Baker & McKenzie, all reporting a drop in lateral appointments.

Merger and lateral activity among US law firms slowed slightly in 2007 but despite the darkening financial horizon, many in the industry expect the attorney shuffle to retain energy in 2008, writes the National Law Journal. According to consultancy group Hildebrandt International, mergers involving US law firms totaled 55 in 2007 - comprising 23 in the first quarter, 14 in the second quarter, 11 in the third quarter and just seven in the fourth quarter.

Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft has laid off 35 lawyers, becoming the latest major US law firm to suffer the effects of the credit crunch. In a statement released today (10 January) the firm blamed "unexpected and persistent volatility" in the financial markets for the redundancies, saying disruption in the capital markets was affecting many of its clients.
