    Debevoise posts solid results rise for 2006

    Debevoise & Plimpton has posted its financial results for 2006 with turnover rising 7% to $575m (£295m) and partner profits up 8% to $1.806m (£925,000). The 2006 figures come off the back of a robust year for the 132-partner firm's M&A department, which advised on deals including the three-way $56bn (£31bn) merger of mining companies Phelps Dodge, Inco and Falconbridge in June.

    Profits surge at Shearman but fee income static

    Shearman & Sterling has unveiled a robust increase in partner profits for 2006, although turnover at the New York firm remained static. Profits per equity partner were up by 12% to $1.65m (£842,000) from a figure of $1.48m (£752,000) in 2005. However, turnover inched up by just 1% to reach $842m (£429m).

    Manhattan leader Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom has topped the US M&A rankings after acting on $540bn (£274bn) worth of deals in a blockbuster year for US deal lawyers. The New York firm rose one place to take top spot after advising on 237 deals, according to figures from Mergermarket. Sullivan & Cromwell came second, acting on 136 deals worth a total of $504bn (£255bn).
