    Sullivan seizes lead on Microsoft's Yahoo bid

    Sullivan & Cromwell has been drafted in to advise Microsoft on its landmark $44.6bn (£22.bn) attempted takeover of internet giant Yahoo after New York rival Simpson Thacher & Bartlett was conflicted out. Simpson Thacher this week confirmed that it had been forced to withdraw from the mandate due to a conflict which could not be resolved. The firm had initially been handed the lead role for Microsoft, as reported by legalweek.com on 4 February.

    Expansive Mayer Brown posts solid results on back of challenging 2007

    Mayer Brown has joined Winston & Strawn and Baker Botts to post strong financial results for 2007 - despite a challenging year for the transatlantic firm.Mayer Brown managed to boost revenues and partner profits by 9%, despite legal claims against the firm and an internal restructuring. Turnover at the top 10 firm rose from $1.084bn (£550m) in 2006 to $1.183bn (£601m). Meanwhile, profits per equity partner (PEP) moved up by 9% to $1.24m (£629,000) in 2007, up from $1.14m (£577,000) the previous year.

    NY duo record double-digit growth for 2007 as Milbank enjoys best-ever year in London

    Weil Gotshal & Manges and Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy have both announced double-digit growth in turnover and profitability with Milbank managing to boost revenues by almost 20%. Milbank more than doubled its 2006 growth rate to record an 18.8% rise in global fee income, taking turnover from $540.8m (£274.6m) in 2006 to $642.5m (£326.2m) in 2007.Profits per equity partner (PEP) rose by 16.4% to $2.53m (£1.28m) compared to $2.17m (£1m) in 2006.
