    Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy may have opened in London more than 30 years ago, but it is only in recent months that its recruitment efforts have really started to gather pace. Last month's hire of Norton Rose financial disputes partner Charles Evans capped a run of high-profile new joiners for the US firm's City arm, with the appointment marking the fifth lateral partner addition in as many months. It followed the recruitment of former Linklaters projects veteran Clive Ransome and Mayer Brown leveraged finance partner Neil Caddy in August, while Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's Nicholas Spearing, the office's first competition partner, joined in June – a year after Milbank narrowly missed out on hiring SJ Berwin's then EU and competition head Stephen Kon, who opted to remain at the City firm where he is now senior partner.

    Eversheds acts on Shell-Waitrose petrol deal

    Eversheds has advised on an agreement between Shell UK and Waitrose that will see the oil and gas giant take over the running of the retail chain's petrol stations. The deal has seen Waitrose, which is part of the John Lewis Partnership, allow Shell to take over the branding of its petrol stations and supply petrol to Waitrose filling stations for a five-year period.

    Carillion to drive panel firm work through new low-cost legal arm

    Carillion is to make all of its recently appointed panel firms use its new low-cost arm in Newcastle for commoditised work as the FTSE 250 construction group considers offering the service to other companies or law firms. The Newcastle base, known as Carillion Advisory Services (CAS), currently houses 60 paralegals providing support to Carillion on the commoditised elements of deals and other work, as well as providing legal aid advice to clients.

    Bond Pearce and Field Fisher Waterhouse have advised on the Post Office's successful bid to continue supplying tax discs to UK motorists. The £450m contract with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will see the Post Office's standing authority to sell road tax and run driving licence applications renewed for a further seven years.
