    Winston & Strawn eyes Taiwan, Singapore offices in Asia push

    US law firm Winston & Strawn is eyeing new offices in Taiwan and Singapore as part of a wider Asia growth plan that will see it double in size in the region. The Chicago-headquartered outfit, which currently has three Asian bases located in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing which it inherited from now defunct Heller Ehrman five years ago, plans to grow its teams in IP, corporate, anti-trust, energy and disputes.

    BLP appoints new head of EPI group as Younson leaves firm

    Berwin Leighton Paisner has appointed Lisa Mayhew as head of its employment, pensions and incentives (EPI) practice, following the departure of Fraser Younson last week. Younson – a former McDermott Will & Emery and Baker & McKenzie partner - spent seven years at BLP, joining the firm in 2006 as EPI head. His destination is not yet known.

    NQ intake at London offices of top US firms dips by 6%

    The intake of newly qualified lawyers (NQs) at the largest US and international firms in the UK fell by 6% in the last year, highlighting the continued uncertainty for lawyers at the junior end of the profession. Just a handful of firms in the group of 21 surveyed by Legal Week posted year-on-year increases in the number of NQs who were offered and accepted a training contract. These included Mayer Brown, Shearman & Sterling, McDermott Will & Emery and Sidley Austin. Sidley Austin, alongside Paul Hastings and Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom were the only firms to retain 100% of their intake. The research also highlighted the sizeable impact US and international firms have had on the graduate recruitment market, with Reed Smith, Dentons and Baker & McKenzie each taking on at least 25 NQs in 2013.
