Herbert Smith and Slaughter and May have advised on a $1.5bn (£959m) energy M&A deal which has seen China's Sinopec acquire almost half of Talisman Energy's UK North Sea business. BLP is keeping on 80% of its 20 trainees after 16 newly qualified (NQ) lawyers accepted positions at the firm. Australian airline group Qantas has turned to Sydney firm Allens for its new general counsel after longstanding legal head Brett Johnson announced his intention to retire. Allens corporate partner Andrew Finch is set to join the airline in November to take up the general counsel role. He has been a partner at the Australian firm for more than a decade and counts Qantas among his major clients.

CMS Cameron McKenna, Olswang and White & Case are among a number of law firms to have confirmed retention rates for their September intakes, with Olswang also unveiling changes to its trainee recruitment scheme. Camerons has announced an 84% retention rate, slightly up on the 81% kept on from the firm's March intake. Of 31 newly qualified (NQ) trainees, 26 took up positions at the firm after 29 were offered jobs. The March intake saw 25 of 31 NQs kept on.
