Retired partners from defunct Coudert Brothers have lost their second attempt to recover money from three law firms that took a sizeable chunk of the firm's assets after its 2005 dissolution, reports the New York Law Journal. A group of 24 former partners sued Baker & McKenzie, Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe and Dechert in 2007, claiming that the firms conspired with Coudert partners to buy firm assets for less than fair market value. Because none of the three firms took on 50% of Coudert's assets, none were true 'successor' firms with obligations to continue paying retirement benefits, according to court filings.

China lawyer headcount at the top 250 US law firms rose by almost 10% last year, as the region continues to grow in importance for international law firms. The largest 250 US-based law firms by lawyer headcount - as compiled by The National Law Journal - added 194 lawyers to their China offices during the past year to reach a total of 2,249, while the total number of offices grew from 124 to 132.

Herbert Smith and Baker & McKenzie have been appointed to advise on the joint venture (JV) between Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and China's Chery Automobile as the British car giant looks to expand its presence in Asia. Herbert Smith, which is acting for JLR, has a longstanding relationship with the car manufacturer's Indian parent company, Tata Motors.
