Linklaters, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and US firms Kirkland & Ellis and Weil Gotshal & Manges have picked up roles on the planned initial public offering (IPO) of British vacuum technology producer Edwards Group, which is expected to value the company at £1.5bn. Magic circle firm Freshfields has been instructed by Edwards Group, fielding a team led by London corporate partners Simon Witty and Natasha Good, who are working alongside US-qualified corporate partner Don Guiney.

Clifford Chance (CC) looks set to become the first leading City firm to open an office in South Korea, with the firm planning to launch after the country's legal market is opened up to foreign law firms this summer. Senior lawyers remain convinced that hiring partners is an effective way to build their firm's business despite concerns over the difficulty of finding and integrating promising candidates. The latest Big Question survey found that 64% of respondents believed hiring partners laterally was an effective means of strategically developing a law firm, including 15% who said it was 'very effective'. A further 32% felt it was 'quite effective' while 4% said it either did not work or was counterproductive.

Kirkland & Ellis has emerged as one of the strongest performers in the 2010 US reporting season, with the US top 10 law firm seeing both revenue and profits climb sharply, writes The Am Law Daily. The firm's revenues rose by 14% to $1.63bn (£1bn) in 2010, while profits per equity partner (PEP) jumped 23% to $3.08m (£1.91m). The PEP figure puts Kirkland in an elite group of US firms with PEP above $3m (£1.9m).
