    Magic circle trio break into profits top 10 as City firms move up Global 100

    Profits per equity partner (PEP) at top US law firms still narrowly exceed key UK rivals - despite the significant increases the magic circle have achieved in turnover and profitability in recent years. Figures compiled by Legal Week and The American Lawyer show that just three UK firms make it into the global top 10 by PEP - Slaughter and May, Linklaters and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. In contrast, seven US firms make the grade - headed by elite firm Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz.

    Dewey & LeBoeuf, O'Melveny & Myers and Baker & McKenzie have unveiled their associate salaries for the coming year, as some of the first mid-Atlantic firms reveal their new rates. Newly-qualified (NQ) lawyers at Dewey & LeBoeuf will now earn £80,000 after the firm's first salary hike post-merger, representing an increase of around £5,000 on the previous salaries paid at both legacy firms.

    Heller losses mount as top litigation duo quit firm

    Covington & Burling has picked up two top litigators from Heller Ehrman's insurance recovery practice, writes The Recorder, in the latest in a series of departures from the West Coast giant. David Goodwin, who joined Heller in 1986 and helped found and later chair two practices, and Lawrence Hobel, who joined in 1989, both begin work at Covington's San Francisco office this week. They join office managing partner Donald Brown, the only other local partner in the Washington DC-based firm's insurance recovery group, which now includes 27 partners nationwide.
