Simmons & Simmons has strengthened its City telecoms practice with the hire of a partner from Ashurst. Andrew McMillan, who headed Ashurst's communications sector group, joined Simmons' corporate and commercial practice at the end of last month and will form part of the law firm's media and telecommunications (TMT) sector group, which includes five partners in London.

Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has invited a handful of its closest legal advisers to 'fast-track' its general legal review, it has emerged, guaranteeing a group of core firms places on its coveted panel. The bank contacted a number of its key advisers earlier this summer inviting them to join the panel early providing they agreed to basic terms on fees, rather than waiting until the full review is completed later this year. It is thought Allen & Overy (A&O), Linklaters, Ashurst and Denton Wilde Sapte are among those invited to take part.

Linklaters has joined Slaughter and May at the top of the Hemscott rankings of legal advisers to FTSE 100 companies, with both firms listed as advising 25 of the UK's biggest companies. Hemscott's Q3 rankings put the firms neck-and-neck for the first time. Slaughters has dominated the list since the rankings were first released in 2005, at which point it had 10 more FTSE 100 clients than Freshfields.

DLA Piper has bolstered its Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) corporate practice with the addition of Linklaters partner Jon Hayes. Hayes, who trained at the magic circle firm and became a partner in 2001, joins DLA today (1 September) with the aim of boosting client ties with London corporates and international clients. He will work alongside DLA's EMEA corporate head Juan Picon. Ashurst and Allen & Overy (A&O) are among a raft of firms advising as home improvement retailer Focus DIY moves to secure a rescue deal through a company voluntary arrangement (CVA). Ashurst has been advising Focus DIY on the proposed CVA, which received more than 90% backing from creditors last month (24 August). It will see landlords of some 38 closed stores agreeing to waive rent liabilities in return for a share of a pot of money thought to be worth around £3.7m.
