    RBS to push for fixed fees in post-ABN panel review

    The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has launched a review of its UK panel of legal advisers, following senior changes to its in-house team in the wake of its merger with ABN Amro.Next month RBS will be writing to panel firms to inform them of the review timetable in what will be one of the most competitive pitches of the year. Several non-panel firms that have performed well on ad hoc instructions will also be invited to tender."It is important for us to keep our panels fresh," RBS deputy general counsel Chris Campbell told Legal Week.

    Candover appoints first-ever GC with SRM hire

    Candover Investments has appointed Philip Price as its first-ever general counsel. Price joined the UK-listed parent company of private equity house Candover Partners at the end of February from hedge fund group SRM Global, to take up a new role as both general counsel and company secretary. He has replaced Candover's former company secretary Andrew Moberly who has resigned, with his post covering Candover's legal, compliance and company secretarial functions.

    City lawyers hit with Budget income tax hike

    City solicitors will see a sharp rise in personal taxation after chancellor Alistair Darling today (22 April) announced a new 50% rate of income tax as Labour fights to bring the UK's strained public finances under control. The new top tax rate, which will apply to earnings in excess of £150,000, will be implemented from April next year, earlier than was initially expected.The move goes further than an announcement in November 2008 that the top rate of UK income tax would rise from 40% to 45% in April 2011. The move is also likely to spark a renewed debate regarding the impact of taxation on the City's position as a leading finance centre.

    Nabarro partner promotions see three made up

    Nabarro is promoting three lawyers to its partnership, with the London office gaining two new partners and Sheffield gaining one. The promotions round represents the second annual decline in new partner numbers for Nabarro, after the firm made up five partners in 2008 and seven the year before. Nick Lloyd will become a partner in the firm's real estate dispute resolution practice in London from 1 May, with Lukas Rootman becoming a partner in the Sheffield environmental group from the same date.

    UK legal sector becoming more 'socially exclusive'

    The UK legal sector has been highlighted by the Government as one of a number of professions becoming increasingly socially exclusive. A Cabinet Office report led by Alan Milburn MP has found that more than half of the UK's legal profession were independently educated, with this figure increasing to two-thirds of servicing judges. The Panel on Fair Access to the Professions' first paper looking at the trends and issues relating to access to the top professions found this figure compared with only 7% of the UK population going to public school until the age of 16.

    Ashurst has bolstered its Singapore office with the relocation of a senior London corporate partner and the launch of a dispute resolution practice in the region. The top 10 City firm transferred Susan Roy to Singapore to lead the office's corporate practice earlier this month. Roy's relocation makes her the first head of corporate for Ashurst's 25-lawyer Singapore arm, which has previously been overseen by office managing partner Matthew Bubb. Roy - whose practice focuses on M&A, including private equity and equity capital raisings - is the fourth partner in the office.
