    CC bolsters India capital markets practice

    Clifford Chance (CC) has recruited capital markets partner Rahul Guptan from Indian law firm Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co. Guptan will join CC's Singapore arm and India group, bringing the total number of lawyers in the group to 195 across the firm's international offices.The hire follows the magic circle firm's launch of a securities and capital markets group in Singapore at the beginning of the year.

    Herbert Smith lands £13bn tobacco restructuring

    Herbert Smith has won the lead role on the £13bn restructuring of its long-time client British American Tobacco (BAT). The proposed restructuring, along with a related secondary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, has been requested by luxury goods company Richemont and investment group Remgro. Between them, the two companies hold around 30% of stock in BAT.

    Top US firms Davis Polk & Wardwell and Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison have landed roles on the $1.2bn (£616m) sale of German music company Bertelsmann's 50% stake in Sony BMG to Sony Corp. The deal will see the Japanese music giant take full control of the Sony BMG joint venture that was created in August 2004.The newly-formed company will be called Sony Music Entertainment Inc (SMEI) and will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Corp.

    The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has ended its search for a new general counsel with the internal appointment of Frances Barr.Barr, a competition specialist and a legal director with the OFT, has worked for the regulator for the last 10 years, having previously worked in private practice at Slaughter and May.The appointment follows the retirement of former general counsel Brian McHenry, who stepped down from the post in May. Senior director of policy, Ali Nikpay, had been holding the position on a temporary basis for the last two months.
