Partner promotions across the top 10 City firms fell by 10% over the last financial year, according to Legal Week research which suggests law firms are already tightening their belts in preparation for a downturn.The group made up 207 partners in total compared with 231 in 2007, even though across the top 50 as a whole new partner promotions are marginally up on 2007.

Female associates continue to lag far behind their male counterparts when it comes to partnership prospects, with women representing less than a third of this year's new partner promotions. Only 27% of the total number of new partner promotions across the top 50 were female this year - amounting to 161 new female partners compared to 424 male partners. On average women made up only 29% of each firm's new partner promotions, with this figure falling further still at a number of firms.

Corporate promotions dominated this year's partnership round, with the practice gaining just under a third of this year's new partners across the top 10 City firms. Almost 30% of all new partners across the top 10 City firms were in their corporate practices, with the figure dropping only slightly across the top 50 to around 25%. Of the magic circle firms, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer saw the largest share in corporate promotions, with 36% of its new partners entering the corporate practice.
