In contrast to their Italian neighbours across the Mediterranean sea, Spanish lawyers and law firms have been a model of stability over the years - particularly at the top end of legal practice. Despite the incursion of international firms, the entrance of the major accounting firms into the legal market and the breakneck growth of the Spanish economy, the legal sector has been characterised by the apparently serene progression of its leading law firms from small local players into some of continental Europe's largest and most successful independent law firms. In 2007, according to Mergermarket, the three leading firms - Uria Menendez (advising on deals worth E99.8bn (£71.8bn)), Cuatrecasas, (E34.7bn (£24.9bn)) and Garrigues (E49.6bn (£35.6bn)) occupied the first three positions, with other local leaders Gomez-Acebo and Perez-Llorca not far behind.

Slaughter and May is preparing to handle the UK's first full nationalisation since the 1970s following the announcement this week that the Government plans to take control of Northern Rock. The decision to reject two private sector bids for the ailing mortgage lender will come as a blow to a number of City firms, including Allen & Overy, which was advising Virgin Group, the front-runner to acquire the bank. The news leaves Slaughters, which is fielding a team under partner Charles Randell, working on an unprecedented corporate takeover under intense scrutiny. The bid, which will be backed by emergency legislation, will notably have to avoid falling foul of European Commission rules on state aid and is also likely to face a legal challenge from Northern Rock shareholders.

Journalists are certainly no shirkers when it comes to blagging the occasional freebie or three. Indeed, several Diary spies have not actually paid for one meal since first being admitted to the Legal Week command beacon. But nothing quite compares to the dedication to the ligging lifestyle shown by canny in-housers in the private equity econo-sphere.Claire Wilkinson, founder of in-house networking group the Private Equity Lawyers Forum, recently batted her eyelashes at former firm Slaughter and May - apparently not exactly famed in the in-house community for its generous entertaining - and managed to convince the top-flight M&A shop to stump up a plush three-course meal for the entire group.Whether the in-housers were given their own personalised napkin-holders in classic Slaughters silver is not yet known.
