The top 10 firm moved into second place behind Slaughter and May for FTSE 100 clients - also putting in a strong performance with listed clients across the board. Other firms to improve their top client tallies were Lovells - which gained one FTSE 100 client and one place, Norton Rose, Addleshaw Goddard and Burges Salmon.

Slaughter and May has advised Standard Life Assurance on the £6.7bn reinsurance of some of its annuity liabilities to Canada Life International Re - thought to be the largest deal of its kind in the UK to date.The deal closed on 14 February and the Slaughters team was led by corporate partner Craig Cleaver and tax partner Graham Earles. The firm has acted for Standard Life since it won a competitive tender to advise the insurer on its demutualisation in 2004 and subsequent stock market flotation.

Despite the incursion of international firms, the entrance of the major accounting firms into the legal market and the breakneck growth of the Spanish economy, the legal sector has been characterised by the apparently serene progression of its leading law firms from small local players into some of continental Europe's largest and most successful independent law firms. In 2007, according to Mergermarket, the three leading firms - Uria Menendez (advising on deals worth E99.8bn (£71.8bn)), Cuatrecasas, (E34.7bn (£24.9bn)) and Garrigues (E49.6bn (£35.6bn)) occupied the first three positions, with other local leaders Gomez-Acebo and Perez-Llorca not far behind.

Linklaters has surpassed magic circle rival Clifford Chance (CC) as the UK law firm with the strongest brand, according to a new study. The 2008 table of the top 500 business brands compiled by Superbrands saw Linklaters rank highest among law firms at 259 on the list, with CC at number 296 and Eversheds the third-placed law firm at 309.
