    Circle of Friends

What is striking about an M&A-focused deal table of independent law firms in Europe is the dominance of the Slaughter and May best friends network. Sitting at the top of the table of deals announced in the 12 months to 30 September, 2007, based on value, is Slaughters' Italy ally Bonelli Erede Pappalardo, edging Slaughters' Dutch friend De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek into a close-run second place. Spain's Uria Menendez came an equally close third, making it a Slaughters sweep for the medal positions. A year in Paris

Plus ca change; plus c'est la meme chose. An old adage maybe, but an apt summary by one managing partner of the past year for France's independent law firms.

    Tough love

Valentino Garavani long ago resolved succession issues at the company he started in the 1960s, selling the Valentino label to holding company HdP in 1998. Since then the brand has changed hands twice, most recently being snapped up by UK private equity firm Permira. Another giant of Italian fashion, Giorgio Armani, continues to stall his plans for a future when he is no longer around to lead his fashion house.
