    A&O launches document management company

    Allen & Overy (A&O) has launched an independent company in New York offering documentation risk management services to financial institutions. The firm has appointed London derivatives lawyer John Berry as general counsel of the new business, named docGenix. DocGenix's non-executive board will include London debt capital market partner Jonathan Brayne and New York senior partner Dan Cunningham.

    Cleary confirms exclusive College of Law deal

    Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton's City arm has sealed an agreement with the College of Law that will see the College become the firm's exclusive provider of the Graduate Diploma in Law, the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and the Professional Skills Course (PSC). The agreement will start in September 2009 when Cleary will send 12 of its future trainees to the College for the LPC. The trainees will be able to study in any of the College's centres around the UK, although most are expected to attend the Moorgate centre, where the LPC and PSC electives will be taught in firm-specific groups.

    Top firms to disclose carbon footprint

    The Legal Sector Alliance (LSA) has launched a bespoke tool for measuring law firms' carbon footprint. The carbon footprint protocol has been designed by members of the LSA, a group of firms and organisations working together to reduce carbon emissions. Eighteen firms involved with the LSA have committed to disclosing their carbon footprint on the LSA website in December, although those using the tool will not be obliged to report their figures publicly. The tool, which can be found on the LSA website, includes a spreadsheet measurement system as well as guidance.

    US law firm Steptoe & Johnson has recruited two environmental lawyers, including the practice chair, from Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft, reports The New York Law Journal.Andrew Perel, the chair of Cadwalader's environmental litigation practice, and Daniel Lavoie, a senior lawyer in the group, are both joining Washington DC-based Steptoe's New York office as partners.

    Banking giant HSBC has signed up Mayer Brown JSM to its knowledge-sharing venture, taking the tally of law firms sharing legal know-how with the bank to 11. HSBC officially rolled out its SmartSearch software, which allows its in-house legal team to access know-how and precedents at panel firms, in January with 10 panel firms. Mayer Brown's data will now be available to HSBC by the end of the month.

    Google is at the forefront of many legal battles these days, from data protection over antitrust to intellectual property (IP) litigation. This article highlights some of the IP challenges that Google is currently facing in Europe. The outcome of these legal conflicts may shape e-commerce initiatives as well as prompt legislative changes in the near future. Google v Copiepresse has been one of the most high-profile copyright sagas seen in Europe in recent years. Copiepresse is an association of several major Belgian newspaper publishers. Google included several of these publishers' newspaper articles both on its 'Google News' page and in the cache of its search engine service. Whereas Google News only included the headlines and the first few sentences of these newspaper articles, the cache of Google's search engine contained full reproductions of these articles.
