Shearman & Sterling has announced an increase of 4% in its London associate salaries as the pay gap between City firms and their US rivals closes. The move, which takes effect from today (1 May), means a newly-qualified solicitor in the New York firm's City base will now get £75,000 a year, up from the £72,000 on offer previously.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has announced its salary increases for the coming year, matching Allen & Overy (A&O) and placing itself marginally ahead of Clifford Chance (CC) and Linklaters. From 1 May, newly-qualified lawyers at the magic circle firm are due to be paid in the region of £65,000, up 18% from £55,000 last year. This meets the rate A&O announced last week, and puts it marginally ahead of Linklaters, which will pay £64,000, and CC, which will pay £63,500.
