U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, named Monday as the GOP’s vice presidential candidate, may have unintentionally strengthened President Joe Biden’s hand in nominating his choice to a Chicago federal judgeship.

Biden nominated April M. Perry to serve as the first female U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois last year, but Vance–who joined the ticket led by former President Donald Trump–objected to Perry’s swift confirmation to protest what he described as a “Department of Justice that seems far more interested in politics than in justice.”
