While most municipalities turn to outside counsel when in need of an unbiased viewpoint, New York City takes an in-house approach—with former federal prosecutor Aaron Mendelsohn director of the City Council’s Oversight and Investigations Division since June 2022.

Mendelsohn said the OID is an apolitical, yet essential function of Council that goes out into the streets, or makes requests for information directly to city agencies, to uncover facts that support Council’s legislative and budget decisions.
