A New Jersey jury returned an $8 million verdict in favor of a nearly 70-year-old Newark woman who was injured by retail employees chasing a shoplifting suspect.

According to the plaintiff’s attorney in the case, Galo v. Singh, on Jan. 15 an Essex County jury awarded the verdict to 69-year-old Ida Galo, finding that the defendant retailer, Save Smart, was negligent. The trial, which Judge Jeffrey B. Beacham oversaw, ended with the jury unanimously awarding all $8 million for Galo’s pain and suffering.
